I got this image today in an email from Barneys New York for some jewelry. I was amazed at how it looked and at first I thought it was maybe some makeup powerder crushed up to resemble the face of and owl, but it would be hard to get them to have such uniform directionality.
What I think it actually is, is little magnetics fillaments like those found in the old magent toy, Wolly Willy, which allowed you to move a metal tipped pen around to draw hair on a cartoon head. They must of got quite a bit of it to create this image of the owls face. Also another important note is that the gold earring center piece must be photoshoped on after because it being metall would immediately attract the surrounding magnetic fillaments. 
So when we take a close look at the earring it's still hard to tell if it was photoshoped or not because overall its a convincing design. Never-the-less, this is a good example of thinking out of the box and really the line between design and true modern artistc thinking.
